On Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids, Scorpion Hearts Club is a coffee shop built for dreamers, and it has a great story. Owner Lori Slager Wenzel ran the Wealthy Street location as Sparrows for fifteen years before giving it a fresh start under a new name, one that came from learning to take care of her own “scorpion heart.” Same cozy historic building, same creative spirit, but with more heart.
Come for the coffee, which is thoughtfully made and comes with some very funny drink names, and stay for everything else. There is local art and a cute little merch corner inside, a vine covered outdoor area for sunny days, and a calendar full of events like poetry nights, pop up bakeries, and clothing swaps. They also run a community coffee fund that gives free brewed coffee to unhoused neighbors, which tells you a lot about the place and what matters to them.
